Curriculum

At Heathfield Academy, we are proud of our creative, engaging and broad and balanced curriculum. In Early Years we follow the EYFS curriculum and from Key Stage 1 we follow the National Curriculum and teach the ‘core’ subjects of English, Maths, Science, Physical Education (PE) and Computing. Our ‘foundation’ subjects are taught through the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) with a particular focus on Personal, Social, and Health Education (PSHE).

Our school values (PUPAC – passion, urgency, positivity, aspiration and commitment) are integral to our curriculum and are at the heart of everything we do at Heathfield Academy. PUPAC enables us to shape our children into the learners they need to be to go on to lead successful lives and be lifelong learners.

To complement learning and bring it to life, teachers plan exciting and relevant ‘Over and Above’ opportunities for the children. These activities, which are planned through the curriculum, are designed to provide our children with exciting opportunities they may not ordinarily have access to in and out of school. For example, our Reception children go swimming in the first term at school, providing a new experience for many of our children as well as building resilience and confidence. Teachers work closely with their classes to ensure these ‘Over and Above’ opportunities are relevant and meaningful to both the children’s learning and prior experiences. The ‘Over and Aboves’ involve regular access to practical learning experiences, going on visits to places of interest in the local and wider community and welcoming relevant visitors (including parents) into school.  In KS2 children are also offered the opportunity to take part in residential trips.  As well as being fun and meaningful, these opportunities help to extend the children’s knowledge of the world around them.
